Facilities Planning & Design Review

Facilities Planning & Design Review serves an important role within the Division of Operations’ Planning, Development and Construction department by providing oversight of GW’s Design Standards, Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification process, and Americans wth Disabilities Act (ADA) physical access planning on Foggy Bottom, Mount Vernon, and Virginia Science and Technology Campuses, as well as renovations within off-campus leased space.

Responsibilities

  • Creation and implementation of GW Design Standards (.pdf)
  • Review project design documents for construction projects to ensure  compliance with design standards and best practices
  • Survey of ADA physical access and the strategic planning of barrier removal projects
  • Oversight of the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification process for new construction and major renovations
  • Guide design and installation of green roofs on campus

GW Design Standards

The GW Design Standards establish guidelines for the design of all new construction and major renovation projects on the Foggy Bottom, Mount Vernon, and Virginia Science and Technology Campuses. These standards are also applicable for minor renovations and maintenance projects on a case-by-case basis.

The standards provide project managers and design consultants with guidelines for specifying products and systems that conform to the university’s aesthetic and functional demands. They also make them aware of relevant resources and requirements that exist outside of the standards, but are critical to the overall development of a project.

The standards are updated on a semi-annual basis to improve operational efficiencies and incorporate environmental, design, and construction best practices.

Know Before You Build: Use these standards for new construction and major renovations.
